Samaria Natura protected gorge

Samaria is a unique gorge and the largest in Europe

Samaria Gorge is 12km long (plus 6km to the beach) where lavish green is the starting point, in the middle there are rocks and at the end the Agia Roumeli beach.

The Gorge starts at the Omalos Plateau and ends at the Agia Roumeli beach. Trekking is wonderful as it starts from almost the top of the mountains. Descending to the sea level is also a challenge requiring fitness and good shoes. It is very well organised, with many fountains and places to rest under the trees. The everchanging environment makes it interesting to take photos. Flora here is protected and many plants are indigenous. Remains of inhabitation still exist in many places. Till end of June a river flows through the gorge and many small bridges facilitate the visitors. A dive in the sea is a must after so many hours of walking. In Agia Roumeli there are all facilities available. Select either an organised tour to the Gorge or use the public buses, in which case pay attention to the last departure of the ship from Agia Roumeli.
