Palaiochora has a combination of sandy and pebble beaches, where tourists, besides enjoying the sea and the sun, can also take boat trips at nearby shores, such as Samaria Gorge and the island of Gavdos.

Despite of the long drive from Hania, the experience of driving through Lefka Ori mountains is rewarding. On the way to town there are various villages you can visit for a short walk. The town is well developed and offers all types of amenities for the tourists. Fish taverns, hotels, convenience stores and souvenir shops are in abundance here. Take your time and enjoy wandering at the streets of this friendly town. Since it is situated on a peninsula, the town has a main sandy beach at the right side and others in short distance, where the sea remains calm even when winds are strong. On the left side of the town there are rocks and deep sea. Further away one can visit quieter beaches.
From Palaiochora depart ships that offer day trips to Sugia, Agia Roumeli, and even Elafonisi (always consult the shipping company beforehand). People interested in trekking can combine staying here and walking to Lissos then to Sougia and back. Beware though, one needs to be well prepared to walk under the sun long distances!
